JHU APL AACC/BFSA Scholarship Application

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory African American Culture Club/Black Faculty and Staff Association (AACC/BFSA) has established a scholarship to assist graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college with a major in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) discipline. It provides a one- time undergraduate scholarship of $1,000 to selected high school students, including socio-economically disadvantaged minorities and women who might not otherwise be able to attend college.

Please note that you cannot save your progress once started.

Students must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be eligible for this award: • Be a resident of Maryland, Northern Virginia, or Washington, D.C. • Be a graduating high school senior with plans to attend a four-year college or community college as a full-time student • Have a 3.0 or higher GPA (un-weighted) • Have a B average or above in mathematics and science courses • Student must plan to major in a STEM discipline

The online application must include: • A personal statement (double-spaced, 250 - 500 words). The personal statement should: • Tell us a little about you and why you should be selected to receive the scholarship. • Describe your future academic goals and what you hope to accomplish with the education and knowledge obtained from your undergraduate degree. • Describe how you plan to use the scholarship funds to further your education should you be selected as a recipient. • Copy of your SAT scores or ACT scores (Optional). • Unofficial copy of your high school transcript. • One reference (from a teacher or counselor who knows you well). Your reference form will be automatically generated upon the submission of this application and will be sent to the teacher or counselor of your choice.

The application deadline for all materials is April 30, 2021, except for recommendation forms, which are not due until May 8th, 2021. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Scholarship recipients will be notified in writing by email no later than June 2021, and will be required to submit their final official transcript, college acceptance letter, and proof of enrollment in order to receive their scholarship check award. If selected, the recipient will be asked to submit a photo and short bio with parental consent.
